An excerpt from our Children's Weekly Email Update:

We are currently in the 8 days of Hanukkah.  If you celebrate, Hanukkah Sameach!  If you don't we thought it would be a good lesson for this week.  I am not Jewish, but I read an article about the Menorah recently that really moved me and lead me to read more.  We know there are 8 candles for the 8 nights the oil burned in the temple (simplified clearly ;) )  But I read about the center candle, the shammash.  The shammash is a servant candle.  It lights all of the other candles.  It made me ask, how can we be the shammash for other people this holiday season?  What light can we bring to others?  We could write cards and draw pictures to send to the nursing home.  We could sing carols in our neighborhood.  We could donate old coats.  We could make dog toys for the shelter.  How can we be the shammash this holiday season?
