The Declaration of Independence brought together a diverse group of people from different backgrounds with a Common Goal, to ensure the people they represented had the opportunities needed to secure their rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. The inhabitants of northern Macomb County were the beneficiaries of this effort which established the Michigan Territory in 1805. Two-hundred and twenty-one years later, our cemeteries reflect the people who migrated and immigrated to our community with a similar purpose, a better life for themselves and their family.
Our Society is proud to partner with the Township of Ray and America250MI to clean and restore markers in two historic cemeteries and engage individuals to uncover and preserve our rich history for future generations, honoring Michigan’s history while inspiring our future. This effort underscores our shared commitment to preserving heritage, community engagement, and education.
The BEYOND THE HEADSTONES project is made possible in part by America250MI History Grant.
America250MI is Michigan’s statewide initiative coordinating programs, partnerships, and storytelling for the United States Semiquincentennial. Together with communities across the state, America250MI celebrates Michigan’s past, present, and future through the 250th anniversary and beyond.
